This series includes 3 workshops with a focus on training, basics, and advanced development. All workshops can be booked separately or as a package.
We will start in December 2022 with, The Mask and the Body Behind, which will prepare you to work with masks through precise physical training. The focus of this workshop by Andres Angulo will be learning to use the body as a tool and to perfect the focus and presence of the, „actor on stage“.
We will continue in January 2023 with, Basics of Mask Theatre led by Björn Leese who will teach breathing and movement behind the mask. This course will also include guidance in creating unique characters that generate simple and playful encounters through improvisation.
Our third workshop entitled, Evolving Mask with Anna Kistel (March of 2023) will focus on the development of a characters’ story both as an individual and as a part of an ensemble. Additionally, it will provide the groundwork for devising masks for each character.

What does a mask need to come alive? How can the body transform itself as a tool for the mask?
Playing with masks needs a consciousness of the whole body. When the actor's face is covered, when our first form of expression is no longer available, the body becomes the first instrument of expression for mask play. Playing with masks means using the whole body as a form of expression and a tool.
Being on stage means that every gesture, every movement is read and interpreted by the audience and becomes fully significant for the story.
During the first part of the workshop we will work intensively with movement exercises and physical training. We will approach some the work of Rudolf von Laban, Michael Chekhov, Étienne Decroux, Jacques Lecoq and Anne Bogart/Tina Landau.
The goal is to expand our physical perception, increase our movement possibilities and consciously recognize the movement of the body. How do I move, what do I move.
During the second part of the workshop we will learn some basic elements of the mask play in order to build mask characters: mask & body.
Focus plays a very important role in our work with masks and we will deal with it intensively during the whole workshop.

What happens when an actor puts on a mask? What hides the mask and what unveils it?
In a three-day basics workshop we will discover the masks of FAMILIE FLÖZ. Through simple improvisations we will explore how masks can come alive through breathing, movement, pose and rhythm.
Because of its precise form masks inherently bring substance and possibilities specific to each character, but only in combination with physical and playful fantasy, and the vision of the actor, can it truly become perceptible, alive, and unique.
It can be a magical experience to witness this process of creation!
The actors simultaneously become the inventors, authors, and players of their characters. We will use this as the starting point for our first encounters and the building blocks for each story.

How and why do characters develop within us?
How does this process take shape? What goes on inside of us to make it happen? What does an ensemble add from the outside?
Am I alone the mask or is my mask also affected by those around me?
What do you see that I do not yet know?
And:
What story does the mask tell? What story do you have to tell?
This workshop is for participants who have attended at least one basic FAMILIE FLÖZ workshop or the FLÖZ Summer Academy.
There is an opportunity to bring a mask (and costume) built with Family Flöz and work with it. Existing characters can be developed further through encounters with other characters to help them find their unique story.
Ensemble work will also be a focus here. Everyone will be responsible for participating in the creative process on an individual and collective level.
Voice, text, song, music and sounds are also welcome.
