In this 3-day basic workshop, participants will discover the masks of FAMILIE FLÖZ.
The aim of the workshop is to develop a basic sense of what it takes to play with masks and how you can say a lot without words!

What does it take to breathe life into a fixed form, the mask?
Working with expressive masks helps the performer to achieve an essential dimension of dramatic play in which the whole body is involved.

The focus is on the basic elements of mask acting: a state of physical presence, movement, emotion, posture, levels of tension and breathing.
How does an independent and unique character emerge from this?

The performers simultaneously become creators, writers and performers of their newly created characters. Through their physical and playful imagination, they explore and develop the game with the mask.
With simple improvisations and short predetermined situations, we explore the connection between the mask, interaction with fellow players and the audience.
The mask is always our starting point for initial encounters and the stories that emerge from them.

Create and play with masks!
The world of masks is fascinating. This intensive week offers insights into the creative process of the FAMILIE FLÖZ: from the development of an idea to improvisation, from the creation of a character to the creation of an entrée or a short scene.

Each day begins with the UNFOLD® method, an innovative movement and awareness training that aims to instil the joy of well-coordinated movement for all. This practice improves the connection between body and mind, heightens simultaneous awareness of self, space and others, and greatly enhances the actor's presence on stage. It enables performers to work with greater balance, focus and energy and enriches their expressiveness and physical storytelling. Valentina is the founder of the UNFOLD® method and has been teaching it for many years, including at the Flöz Summer Academy.

The movement of the mask is explored through guided improvisation: how does a masked figure embody different energies and tensions? A character is defined by what it does and how it does it. How do the inner movements of a character, thoughts and emotions, become visible? The elements that make a mask come alive are worked out together.

How we frame our work often determines where it starts and how it develops. This workshop is an invitation to immerse ourselves into the different methods and structures of theater in an attempt to learn how tools can help us communicate our vision and bring it to the stage. Experience shows that simple tasks and tools are often essential to creating material and structuring storylines that resonate with the audience. Four days of practical physical and theoretical, reflective work. Through group exercises, improvisation, and individual coaching, we will gain practical skills, deepen our understanding of theatrical tools, and unlock new areas of artistic expression – a chance to widen our toolsets. This workshop is aimed at experienced storytellers - whether you are a theatre-maker, filmmaker, writer, actor, director, playwright, choreographer or someone who’s is simply interested in telling stories.
