Body and Movement for Physical Theater & Mask

Encounter with the Mask

Characters and Play

We are delighted to share our passion for mask theater with you again this season in Berlin.

Our workshop series entitled, "Body.Mask.Play", which ran last year, will be relaunched due to high demand.

Like last time, we will once again offer 3 courses that build upon each other, giving participants a deeper insight into individual aspects of the physical body and mask work.

Scroll down for additional info! We look forward to seeing you there!

When the actor's face is covered and our first form of expression is no longer available, the body becomes the primary instrument for expression. Acting with masks means using the whole body as a tool. This requires a consciousness of the whole body. When on stage every gesture and every movement is read and interpreted by the audience and becomes fully significant to the story.

During this workshop we will work intensely on movement exercises and physical training. We will approach the work of Rudolf von Laban, Michael Chekhov, Étienne Decroux, Jacques Lecoq and Anne Bogart/Tina Landau. Our focus will be on the body and the training; we will not work or explore the technique of the mask.

Focus plays a very important role in our work and we will deal with it extensively during the whole workshop.

The goal is to expand our physical perception, increase our movement possibilities and consciously recognize each movement of the body. We will ask ourselves, "How do I move, what do I move?".

Encounter with the mask

The goal in this 3 day workshop is to develop a basic sense of what it takes to play mask.

Part of our work will look at the basic techniques of mask playing, while time will also be spent delving into the playfulness and energy necessary to breathe life into the mask.

First, we start by exploring the possibilities of expressing ourselves beyond words.

Next, we will transfer these experiences to the mask and find out together what the mask needs to come alive.

We will be working with levels of tension, breath, focus and physical transformation.

Throughout, we will always be looking for authentic moments. The mask will be our closest ally to identify these moments. Let's follow the mask!

During this 5-day workshop, we want to give you a handful of tools to create a character and develop short scenes.

We will draw from our work on productions for Familie Floez (Teatro Delusio and Feste) and complement that with our personal artistic experience, sharing with you different perspectives to approach the creation process.

The mask is just the tip of the iceberg in this intense and conscious work with the body which acts as a vessel for the energy and intentions of the player. We will explore ways to develop a character through a variety of approaches and exercises. As this work is character based, we will also build stories for them without using text.

This workshop is designed for people who have already learned a basic technique with us or who already have experience using masks. If this is your first time playing with mask, we recommend the workshop Encounter with the mask, led by Fabian Baumgarten, to get in contact with the technical aspects of playing with a mask. The more confidence you gain with the technique, the more you can be free and creative on stage.
